Central may have a say in title decider

- ALLAN ISAACS

HOCKEY finals are set to light up Hartleyvale today.

The final round of the men’s and women’s hockey playoff series comes to a thrilling conclusion today with four mouth-watering clashes spread across the two leagues.

The league championships are poised to go down to the wire in both the men’s and women’s division as no clear winner is apparent.

The title decider in the men’s division will be a straight shootout between league winners WPCC and defending champions Maties.

In the event of a draw, Central could still have a say as their clash against an indifferent Fish Hoek will have a bearing on the league.

Central need to win by more than three goals to have a say in the final outcome. Ryan Julius returns after he missed last weekend’s game due to national indoor commitments.

WPCC shared the spoils with a rampant Central outfit in their last encounter in a 3-3 draw, however WPCC had enough opportunities to kill off the game.

Maties will be relishing the opportunity of defending the title as they have not lost to WPCC in the league to date. However, Daniel Bell won’t be available for the encounter due to his club commitments in Belgium. This weakens their defence resources but they should have enough manpower available to fill the gap.

The women’s fixtures pits Somerset against Conberg, while Maties face off against WPCC. If Somerset and Maties are victorious, then a playoff game will be played tomorrow to determine the league winner.

However. the women of WPCC could have a say due to their last encounter with Maties, which resulted in a draw. They will be highly motivated to cause an upset.
