New app is ‘Uber of private tutoring’

PREPARING for exams can be daunting and lead to anxiety.

A group of young entrepreneurs has launched an application called Cognition.Online to help pupilsprepare for exams. Their app has been dubbed the “Uber of private tutoring” as it takes just a moment for parents and pupils to request a lesson from screened and pre-approved tutors.

The app-based platform on iOS and Android “performs matches between student demand and tutor supply on a price the market defines”.

According to Cognition. Online director, Kyle Dodds, this means “you request a lesson, we get it in front of the right tutors, they bid, and you choose, pay and get better marks”.

Dodds said there were “ground-breaking features to connect students and tutors in a unique way”.

Features include tutor ratings by students and the flexible nature of tutoring allowed parents to book tutoring sessions that fitted their pockets, Dodds explained.

Dodds said although it was best for students to prepare all year long, it was never too late to get “that last bit of information”.

“Even if it’s the night before your final exam and you’re feeling unprepared, don’t panic, we have the solution.”

Pupils can also phone the Western Cape Education Department’s Safe Schools Call Centre if they need to talk about feeling anxious. The toll-free number is 0800 45 46 47.
