I am doing research on transformation in the judiciary. On the “advocates roll” on the Department of Justice website I noticed a few errors. A senior counsel advocate, N Bawa, is classified as African and not Indian. Someone needs to inform her that the term African is to denote black and not someone residing in Africa. There are already too many Indian advocates (over 10 percent) at the Cape Bar relative to their numbers in the Cape (1 percent). – Michael Ndlovu, Khayelitsha

President Zuma refuses to appoint a judge to look into his state capture as pronounced by the former public protector. Surely by not doing this he is guilty as charged and can only come clean if he allows the case to be tried. Nowhere in the world can a president get away with state capture but only in this country as the president here thinks he is above the law. No wonder we are where we are today, a banana republic. – IJ Saks, Tableview South Africa has only one leader who can eradicate corruption from within the ruling party and indeed all government structures and that is Cyril Ramaphosa. He was the second mostwanted leader at the last conference, hence his appointment as deputy president. There’s no other leader in the party who has his integrity. He might have shortcomings but all the others are worse than him. South Africa must give this man a chance; he did a lot for this country constitutionwise and he will not turn his back on it. We, as South Africans, need to consider very seriously who we put into power because leadership hits us where it matters the most, our pockets. Let us not allow history to repeat itself. – Linda Mokoena

In his letter claiming that reducing road fatalities is a top priority for the DA, MPP Lennit Max says the party “envisions creating a province where road accidents are nearly zero”. Accordingly I challenge Max and the DA to announce their Vision Zero plan for the Western Cape aimed at reducing deaths on our roads to almost zero. This plan must incorporate New York City’s Vision Zero measures as well as Sweden’s and those of England, whose total road deaths in a year, as written about by David Biggs on Wednesday, were 1 713, less than one 10th of South Africa. So let’s have a promise from the DA to have our own Vision Zero in full force by year end in time to cut down the annual December road carnage slated in Max’s letter. – Richard Benson, Road Safety Action Campaign

The City of Cape Town wasted 42 000 litres of water on a single fault reported yesterday. With the ward councillor getting involved, it took eight hours for a technician to arrive and stop the wastage. It literally takes under five minutes. The same fault was reported the previous day. On average, the city’s response time is 5.5 hours and wasting about 29 000 litres of water per callout of this nature. The measurement is based on a flow of 88 litres per minute that was recorded on the meter during this time. – Ganief Rahbeeni, Surrey Estate

Policeman shot

This is the problem with the Cape Flats – the community supports the gangs and criminals. Crime will never be eradicated in these areas; it will only increase. – Javéd Choglé

Take back the streets from the drugsoaked, armed devils who terrorise the community. – Jack Turrok
