City street culture at the Truth

Market will promote local brands and focus on skating and surfing, writes

VOTED best coffee shop in the world, Truth Coffee Roasting epitomises what is ultra cool in Cape Town.

Besides being a trendy hangout spot where you can order coffee with “flavour, not bitterness, no sugar required” and food from the staff dressed in steampunk outfits that can be described as more costume than uniform, the venue – which has the giant roastery at its centre – frequently hosts evening events.

The Cape Town Magic Club has found its new home here for Monday Night Magic; on other nights there have been music and comedy, and next Wednesday is the Truth & Destroy Market.

Expanding on the previous Timeless Market concept, this one will be themed around Cape Town street culture, says spokesperson Samantha Long.

“Our aim is to promote local brands as well as support the local skateboarding, surfing, photography, live music, tattoo and graffiti scenes. This will also be the launch of the Truth and Corona partnership for 2017 so expect great prize giveaways and bucket deals. Everyone receives a Corona on arrival.

“While the night will be mostly focusing on skating and surfing culture, we feel Truth as a brand is very much in line with this way of life. For this market we will be utilising the entire Cafe, Bean Chamber as well as the loft on the second floor for a local skateboarding photography exhibition,” says Long. This will feature the works of Sam Clark, Miguel Howell, Tyrone Bradley Photography, Simon Heale Photography, Bianca Asher Photography, Sacha Specker, and Brendan Pieterse Media.

“We are looking to bring a new and fresh experience to the whole ‘market scene’ and all our upcoming markets will be themed accordingly.”

The live music soundtrack to the market begins with Retro Dizzy (8pm-9pm), a surf rock band from Hermanus, now relocated to Cape Town; followed by three-piece garage/punk band from Cape Town, Black Lung (10pm-11pm) who live with the ambition to eat pizza, drink beer and to “skate or die”.

The bar will be well stocked and street food will keep the hunger pangs at bay.

Truth Coffee Roasting is at 36 Buitenkant Street. The market opens at 7pm and will go on until about midnight. Entrance is R50. For more information call 021 200 0440 or go to www.truthcoffee.com
