Sassa staffers held over R5.5m fraud

EIGHT officials from the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) have been arrested in Mpumalanga for alleged fraud after they allegedly manipulate­d the system to pay out R5.5 million in grants to people who did not qualify.

The Hawks said yesterday its members in Mpumalanga working with crime intelligen­ce officers arrested the Sassa officials on suspicion of fraud and corruption.

“The suspects include eight women and a man between the ages of 32 and 63.”
