HISTORY was made this week at the historical home of South African surfing.

Muizenberg, and in particular Surfer’s Corner, last Sunday hosted a ceremony in which former world champion Shaun Tomson officially opened the Surfers’ Circle Walk of Fame.

It was an apt moment for the Muizenberg Improvemen­t District (MID) and their important recognitio­n of the role played by their community in the evolution of surfing in South Africa. It was here, in 1919, that a UCT student named Heather Price went surfing. She rode a wooden board believed to have been provided by American soldiers on their way home from the First World War.
