Take a sip and paint a picture

THERE are two things I know I cannot do very well at all, and they are sing and paint. Until I have just the right amount of wine, that is.

Karaoke is the unfortunate side effect of this and the evidence on social media seems to stick around far too long. Painting is all right; awful artworks can be buried fairly easily. Then again, with the right guidance – and the right wine – it has been my experience just about anyone can produce a fairly respectable painting of which they are not too mortified.

Enter a new event which takes place on the last Wednesday of every month: Wine Jam. It happens at the Rockwell Hotel in Green Point where a new permanent Flagstone wine tasting room has been installed, and the artistic inspiration and assistance comes via Artjamming™.

Upon arrival you’ll get a complimentary glass of Flagstone wine to get the creative juices flowing. It’s a perfect partnership with these award- winning wines as Flagstone’s slogan is “we are born creative”. The new tasting room is home to a unique artwork piece by local artists Gabrielle Raaff and Justin Fiske, who were commissioned to create this installation depicting the rich heritage that inspired Flagstone Wines.

Visitors to the tasting room, which is open from 11am till 8pm, will be able to choose from more 22 wines in the Flagstone range. Each taster glass is a 100ml serving with prices starting from R10. If you fall in love, ordering at cellar door prices can quickly and easily be done via an online portal.

Once you’ve relaxed with your wine, you’ll make your way outside to the Urban Garden (weather permitting), where tables are set up with an A3 size canvas for each Wine Jammer, easels, a choice of non-toxic acrylic paints on tap, brushes and tools, and the all-important plastic apron.

Every month will have a different painting theme and experts will be on hand to offer step-by-step advice. You really don’t need any skill or experience to enjoy this and I promise you will surprise yourself with the results.

Special offers on Wine Jam nights include a two-for-one burger special, and a curated Flagstone tasting of six wines for R45.

Upcoming Wine Jam dates are April 26, May 31, June 28, July 26, and August 30, from 7pm till 9pm. The Rockwell Hotel is at 32 Prestwich Street, Green Point, and tickets are available through Quicket for R250, which includes an Artjamming session and a complimentary glass of Flagstone wine. Booking is essential as there is a maximum of 30 guests per event.
