Young WPCC side need to consolidate

- ALLAN ISAACS

THE LOCAl hockey leagues will recommence today after a fornight’s break, which was necessitated due to the long weekends and IPT’s being held at the end of April. There has only been two matches played in the Grand challenge leagues and the teams are raring to go with four months of the year already gone.

The Ladies Varsity Cup is also been hosted at Maties this weekend and the games are scheduled to start at 1.30pm.

The men’s game of the weekend sees Fish Hoek host WPCC at Wynberg Astroturf at 4.30pm this afternoon. The Hoekers have only played one game thus far, and beat Langa 3-0 and their opening encounter. They are always a well-drilled outfit and are capable of beating the best on their day. The addition of Matt Becker (GK) and Devin Stanton will have added an element of steel to their defence. They are experienced and wily players and will no doubt assist Warren Grobler and Craig Haley in bringing out the best in their teammates.

WPCC were the form team in last year’s competition and deserved the title, Unfortunately, Maties beat them in the crucial playoff final.

Their start in this year’s competition has been indifferent. A comfortable win against newly-promoted Somerset West was followed up with a surprising 2-1 loss to Vics. The injury to stalwart, Lloyd Norris- Jones also adds to their woes.

But WPCC have a very youthful look about them this year and are blooding a few schoolboys in the first team.

The Maties travel to Langa and should be far too strong for the home team. The Maties have won 1 and drawn 1. Langa have not got out of the starting blocks as yet and will have to improve dramatically if they are to remain in the top tier this year. Fixtures Mens Grand Challenge
