BRIDGE

-

Contract: 6 by South. Opening Lead: SK. RHO plays low. Recommended Line: You have a club loser staring at you, so the diamonds will have to yield four tricks.

If East holds four of them, headed by the king, you need to finesse three times.

To do that, you need three entries. Now that you have your vision, you win the first trick, and lead Q to the K.

Finesse in diamonds, and lead the 9 to the T. All of this showy stuff is just to dazzle your opponents.

The key card in your hand is not hanging in the gallery; it is tucked away in the bottom drawer.

Having reached dummy for the second time (and completed the drawing of the trumps), you take a second diamond finesse. It works, thankfully.

Your clever moves deserve a reward, after all.

You are pleased to see East did indeed start with four diamonds. Now comes the key move: the 2 is led to the 3.

To the sounds of imaginary applause, you take the third finesse in diamonds, and enter a big number on your scoresheet. With just the smallest of flourishes.
