Keep your pets warm this winter

-

OUR furry friends need to be prepared for winter, just like us. Many people do not understand what an animal’s fur coat is about.

If your pet has less or no hair or fur then it is vulnerable to the cold and damp weather. If it is too cold for me outside, it is too cold for my dogs and cats. Shelter is a basic requirement for any outdoor pet. Make sure you have a kennel that can be kept dry and draft-free. The kennel needs to be big enough for your pet to get in and out of easily and to stand up in.

Most pets love an old blanket and it is a great way to keep them warm. Use one or more blankets inside the kennel for insulation. This is especially important for older, arthritic animals.

Cold, damp weather aggravates arthritis in cats and dogs. If your pet is having trouble getting up or lying down, is crying when picked up, rather take it to the vet. Many new arthritis treatments are available.

Using a doggie jersey depends on how tolerant your pet is, but can be a good idea, especially for the little ones. Cats will probably not appreciate being dressed up and usually seek warm places to sit or sleep in.

Having a little cat house or enclosed basket will hopefully prevent the cats from seeking warmth elsewhere, like under the bonnet of a car. If your cat likes sleeping here, make sure you give the bonnet a loud bang before starting your car. This unfortunate accident causes many cat deaths every year.

Antifreeze is also a real threat to our pets. They are attracted to its sweet smell and taste and will often sample it if is left out or spilled. Antifreeze is highly toxic. Please don’t leave this lying around, even in the garage.

Cats may be less willing to go to the toilet outside in colder months, especially if the ground is hard. Give them a litter tray in a “private spot” in the house.

Continue to walk your pet during winter. The exercise will keep their circulation up and increase stamina. As always, exercise is important.

It doesn’t take too much to keep our pets safe and warm. If we can keep ourselves warmer in winter, we can make our furry friends just as cosy.
