Norris-Jones’ return a massive boost for ever-improving WPCC

- ALLAN ISAACS

THE local hockey league is in full swing this weekend with teams having played two games in the past week and involved in double headers today and tomorrow.

Central will host the ever improving WPCC at Vygieskraal at 3pm in an important clash for both teams.

WPCC suffered a surprise 2- 1 defeat against Victorians in their second match in the week, but have put together some good results in recent weeks.

They have recorded victories against Langa and UCT and shared the spoils in an exciting clash against Fish Hoek.

The return of stalwart, Lloyd Norris-Jones, has seen an improvement up front and his experience and guile has added another dimension to their play.

Ryan Crowe and Rondebosch Boys’ head boy, Tim Alfeld, are playing superb hockey up front and are bagging some superb goals.

WPCC also have two of the best drag-flickers in the province in Dave Agar and schoolboy Nic Giger.

Central have had an indifferent start to their campaign and have failed to live up to their potential.

One win, two draws and a loss are not good enough for the Athlone side.

They have failed to gel as a unit and need to improve drastically if they hope to end in the top four.

They have conceded four short-corner goals in the past two games and they need to tighten up in this area.

Central host UCT tomorrow at noon and this will not be an easy encounter either as Gregg Clark’s charges have improved since last year.

Victorians, meanwhile, have been superb thus far and have recorded victories against WPCC, Somerset West and Fish Hoek. Their blend of youth and experience has worked well for the Maties second team, with first team coach Ashlin Freddy adding the experience.

Langa host Vics tomorrow at noon and could be in for a drubbing. Langa have lost all five of their games this season and look destined to be demoted.
