AROLL-CALL of A-list musical stars have performed in Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer’s children theatre production­s at Canal Walk, since the annual festival was establishe­d in 2000.

This year, for the 17th edition, Abrahamse and Meyer’s musical adaption of Peter Pan – by JM Barrie – will be staged in the theatre, which is in the Central Court.

Grant Almirall is playing Peter. Last week, in Joburg, he received the Naledi Theatre Award for best performanc­e in a musical for Singin’ in the Rain.

Jenny Stead plays Wendy. The multi- award winning theatre-maker was nominated for a Fleur du Cap for her role as Janet in the Fugard’s 2014 production of the Rocky Horror Show.

Marcel Meyer, who recently wowed us as Hamlet at the Theatre in the Bay, plays Captain Hook.

It seems a bit of a leap to go from Hamlet to Hook, but Meyer said: “Ironically, many ex-Hamlets have gone on to play Hook, most famously Sir Ian McKellen, who played Hamlet in 1971. He played Hook at the National Theatre in 1997.
