Brett Heron is building an empire at the transport department. As part of this, he closed the city’s awardwinni­ng Environmen­tal Education department. Their programmes had reached over two million, mostly disadvanta­ged scholars, over the last 15 years. What a scandal.

We are lucky that so far we have not had shipwrecks off the Cape and Natal coasts, as often happens in winter. All small craft and life rafts must carry torches or lanterns visible from a vast distance from the air at night as this will save many lives in case of disasters at sea. – Richard Benson, Cape Town
