Brett Heron is build­ing an em­pire at the trans­port depart­ment. As part of this, he closed the city’s award­win­ning En­vi­ron­men­tal Ed­u­ca­tion depart­ment. Their pro­grammes had reached over two mil­lion, mostly dis­ad­van­taged schol­ars, over the last 15 years. What a scan­dal.

We are lucky that so far we have not had ship­wrecks off the Cape and Na­tal coasts, as of­ten hap­pens in win­ter. All small craft and life rafts must carry torches or lanterns vis­i­ble from a vast dis­tance from the air at night as this will save many lives in case of dis­as­ters at sea. – Richard Ben­son, Cape Town
