Hefty prices for heiress’s gifts to heart-throb
CARY Grant, whose tense auction scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 classic suspense film North by Northwest has attained legendary movie status, was given a gold and diamond cigarette case by his second wife, Woolworths heiress Barbara Hutton.
It sold for $13 200 at a California auction.
Other gifts to Grant from the adoring and filthy-rich Hutton included a set of gold, ruby and diamond cuff links, which fetched $5 500.
Another gift was a Faberge Russian rosegold and sapphire box that went for $9 625.
The auction, by the way, was 30 years ago. Imagine what these collectors’ items would be worth today? – Auctions Writer
