OMNI’S second premium auction, on Tuesday and Wednesday, will offer more than 700 lots comprising paintings, furniture, decorative arts, jewellery, watches, silver and books.

“Three works by the Cape Town artist Peter Clarke, which have never been seen before at auction, will be up for grabs, with pre-sale estimates ranging from R80 000 to R250 000, as well as a work titled Girl by Nelson Makamo (R100 000 to R150 000),” says auctioneer Gary Shean.

“Makamo recently held a sell-out exhibition at the Gallery of African Art during the Mayfair Art Weekend in London.”

Also available will be works by Irma Stern, with estimates ranging from R500 000 to R700 000; JH Pierneef, with presale estimates from R400 000 to R600 000; and Keith Alexander (R350 000 to R450 000), as well as sculptures by Lippy Lipshitz (R40 000 to R60 000) and Eduardo Villa (R70 000 to R90 000), among others.

The first of the auction’s four sessions will include a collection of more than 160 rare books and manuscripts from a private collector.

“From first editions through to handwritten manuscripts, including The Poetical Works of Shah Namela of Ferdowsi (R80 000 to R100 000), and Mss on Freemasonry by Alfred Pratt (R60 000 to R80 000), there will be plenty on offer to excite any collector.”

The decorative arts offerings will include a large Lenci figure, Ragazza Di Harrar, designed by Helen Konig Scavini (R20 000 to R30 000) and a Rene Lalique opaque vase (R14 000 to R18 000).

A sparkling collection of limited special edition Swarovski crystal figurines will also be available.

Warren Scheuer of Omni says furniture collectors will be in for a treat, with both local and international furniture, dating from the 18th through to the 20th centuries, to be auctioned.

Pieces include a vintage leather Chesterfield sofa (R10 000 to R15 000), a set of 12 walnut Chippendale-style dining chairs (R40 000 to R60 000) and a French 18th century chestnut armoire (R30 000 to R40 000).

Watch enthusiasts can look forward to viewing a collection of watches from premium international brands such as Tag Heuer, Panerai Luminor, Philippe Patek, Chopard, Cartier and Rolex.

“Also on sale will be a large heart-shaped tanzanite and diamond pendant that is likely to appeal to many female bidders,” says Shean.

Viewing will take place at Omni’s offices at 9 Hemlock Street, Newlands in Cape Town, until Monday from 10am to 4pm.

The auction will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday starting at 10am.
