RUNNERS from more than 70 countries will converge on the Mother City for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon next weekend.

Independent Media is a proud media partner.

Sunday’s 42.2km road race, whose International Association of Athletic Federations Gold Label status makes it unique in Africa, is expected to draw more than 20 000 athletes. Sanlam chief executive of Branding Yegs Ramiah says the scenic route through Cape Town will offer “a challenging day of running”.

The marathon will be broadcast live on SABC2 from 6.30am, and live-streamed on the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon website at www. sanlamcapetownmarathon. com

The winner in the open category stands to take home R265 000, while the second-placed athlete will bag R130 000 and the bronze medallist R70 000. According to the race website, “the fast picturesque route sees you weave through the city centre’s skyscrapers, past the many masts of the Royal Cape Yacht Club, along the banks of the Liesbeek River, under the shaded canopy of the tree-lined Southern Suburbs, around the historic Rondebosch Common, the world famous Newlands Cricket ground, the President’s residence – Groote Schuur, Africa’s finest tertiary institution – the University of Cape Town, historic District Six, the Castle of Good Hope, the Cape Town City Hall, the Houses of Parliament, the City Gardens, St George’s Cathedral, and the Nederduitse Kerk all beneath the watchful gaze of Table Mountain.

“You are nearly home with a loop around Three Anchor Bay before turning towards the Green Point Urban Park, past the Cape Town Stadium and into the finish at Green Point Track.”

Although the main race and 10km Peace Run/Walk take place on a Sunday, there are plenty of other activities and events.

A running expo will be held at the Lookout, V&A Waterfront, on September 14 from 2pm to 7pm, September 15 from 9am to 7pm and September 16 from 9 to 5pm, where athletes can register and receive their race numbers and goodie bags.
