NEW YORK: More than 8 000 chil­dren were killed or in­jured in armed con­flicts through­out the world in the last year, ac­cord­ing to a UN re­port, a num­ber UN sec­re­tary-gen­eral An­to­nio Guter­res de­scribed as “un­ac­cept­able”.

In Afghanistan, 3 512 chil­dren were killed or maimed. In Ye­men the num­ber was 1 340 and in Syria it was 1 299.

Hundreds of chil­dren were re­cruited as sol­diers or sub­jected to sex­ual vi­o­lence. – dpa
