NEW YORK: More than 8 000 children were killed or injured in armed conflicts throughout the world in the last year, according to a UN report, a number UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres described as “unacceptab­le”.

In Afghanista­n, 3 512 children were killed or maimed. In Yemen the number was 1 340 and in Syria it was 1 299.

Hundreds of children were recruited as soldiers or subjected to sexual violence. – dpa
