Reddy leaves void in media
THE founder of SABC’s SAfm radio station, Govin Reddy, died yesterday. He was 74.
Reddy was described by sports administrator and activist Sam Ramsamy as a “walking encyclopedia”.
“I am deeply saddened by the loss. We had spent hours discussing politics and sport. He was undoubtedly a walking encyclopedia on numerous elements on politics, sport and social affairs,” said Ramsamy.
He added that Reddy, who lived in Johannesburg, had had a great competitive spirit and a hands-on approach in whatever he did.
“With an uncompromising position when it came to defending the principles of just causes and fair play.”
Film-maker Anant Singh said he was fortunate to have had Reddy as a friend. “A friendship I will always cherish,” he said. Singh said Reddy had played many significant roles in society.
“From an anti-apartheid activist who was jailed and then forced into exile, an academic, to a media executive. He was a key player in the transformation of the SABC and we acknowledge his contribution to this institution.
“We also thank him for his contribution to the media industry and for his tireless commitment to democracy.”
Reddy leaves his wife, Tessa, and children Priya, Sudeshan, Maika and Niall.
