Maitland seek giant show from imports

MAITLAND GIANTS travel to VOB Macaws in Baseball Associatio­n of WP action today after last week’s 8-1 victory over Westridge Yankees 8-1, a team they struggled to beat last season.

Last week’s win was only Giants’ second win this season, from six games played. Coach Lloyd Koks will hoping to secure another win today to keep Giants’ momentum going.

They will be looking to their foreign trio of Canadian Jaz Shergill and the two American players Connor Walsh and Tyler Krobetsky in both the pitching and hitting department­s.

Giants will look to Wade Morgan, Alex Fortune and Carlo Koks to chip in with the pitching as well.

VOB will be no pushover, having won their last three games. VOB will have to decide between Michael Scritten, Josh Rich or Jaydee Thorne as to who will be starting on the hill.

They will again look to Jared Heynes, Paul Bell and Jody Birch to advance their hitting potential.

Grassy Park Crusaders host Yankees with both teams out to get back to winning ways as both teams lost last week after having good starts this season. Crusaders lost 11-2 to Bellville and Yankees went down to Maitland.

Yankees need to hit a run of consistent victories to boost their efforts to end in the top six teams by the end of round two. They will look to Luwayne du Plessis and Jayson Ripepi for their pitching ability to limit the youthful Crusaders outfit. Crusaders’ Brent Fransman, Chris Jacobs and Warren Adams are the men likely to do damage with the bats.

Crusaders have the choice of pitchers Grant Robertson or Jarrod Williams to start the game for them.

Bellville Tygers travel to Helderberg Pirates intent on keeping their unbeaten season intact. Athlone A’s host Durbanvill­e Villans hoping to secure another win as they slowly climb up the table. Durbanvill­e, with only one victory this season, will come hard at the As.

Bothasig Knights, the other unbeaten team, travel to Stellenbos­ch to take on Van der Stel.

In the Promotion League, log-leaders Milnerton Mavericks are on bye, Thistle take on Bothasig thirds in Bothasig, and Devonshire host Battswood in Grassy Park. – Sean Campbell
