times, and there is still stuff that has not been properly dealt with, but as Cass said on Facebook in a tribute to his dad: “We are going to miss u dad. A true father of our youths. Till the end you stood your ground. U never bowed so that we can all stand as equals”.

It is fitting and apt that the memorial and paddle- out for Ahmed Collier on November 26 at Muizenberg will take place on the same day there as the Outreach Games, which sees all the not-for-profit surfing organisations and development teams congregate to celebrate surfing and the youth.

They are our future, the ones that can make the difference.

The memorial will gather outside at African Soul Surfers and the paddle-out will take place at 2pm. Water safety will be provided.

There was a brief glimmer of hope that the Cell C Goodwave event would run yesterday or today as a perfect-looking storm appeared on the horizon early in the week. The event was put on amber alert, but stood down on Thursday due to too much south in the swell. Additions to the harbour wall in Durban and ceaseless dredging in the bay has changed the dynamics of what kind of swell is needed for New Pier, which now needs much more east direction to get past the wall and into the bay.

Today sees the slow increase of 3’ west swell in light going moderate SW to W onshores. Muizenberg looks offshore, but you might as well swing or play with your rubber duck or practise your SUPping. It looks flat. Tomorrow, however, an epic long-range 16 second West swell to 6’ or bigger has arrived overnight. Surf early before a moderate to fresh SW onshore blows. Expect clean 2ft lines in Muizenberg.
