Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)
MAKE- BELIEVE, MAGIC AND MAYHEM
questions for Saturday Live.
To clarify – the name is Ceri and the pronoun is he/him?
Yes, Ceri is my real name and I’m from Wales. It’s an old Celtic name… and it is he and him.
What is the difference between female impersonator and drag artist/queen?
I always feel female impersonator sends out a softer, gentler, more professional meaning and describes what
I do exactly. I impersonate famous females so I am a female impersonator. I hate the term drag queen as it’s always used in a flippant and derogatory sort of way – which my act is a million miles away from.
How do you decide which women to impersonate?
Well, these days that’s getting more and more difficult as the Hollywood movie star system is disappearing and showbiz, in general, is being taken over by so-called reality TV which I detest! To me reality is real life which can sometimes be tough, horrid and plodding… showbiz should be a zillion miles away from reality and supply makebelieve, magic and mayhem!
Who are some of your favourites?
I’m sorry to say but the older stars like Joan Collins, Zsa
Zsa Gabor, Marlene Dietrich – although I do love Tina Turner, Amy Winehouse and Lady Gaga.
What are some of your favourite costumes?
My Cher and Pamela Anderson (think Baywatch) get a great reaction as do some of my Lady Gaga creations but I love my Marlene Dietrich. Usually my opening gowns also always cause a huge stir but it’s the pantomime creations that do the trick as they are SO OTT! I even came on stage as a giant goldfish bowl once!
What can Cape Town audiences expect from your show at Gate 69?
Good old-fashioned glamour, glitter and laughter!
What do you love about Cape Town? Will you be doing anything special off-stage while you’re here?
I love the vibe, food, weather, the wine… It’s got to be the people here I guess.
Booking is via www.gate69.
