Let’s unite against the current water crisis
AS CHRISTIANS enter the
Holy Lenten period of personal introspection, I reflect on the worst drought crisis in our province in over 100 years, and the looming threat of Day Zero.
At a water conference at Zonnebloem, Anglican
Archbishop Thabo Makgoba gave a Biblical connotation to
Day Zero, equating it to Christ’s crucifixion, and day one to His resurrection.
Christians embrace the sacrificial crucifixion, but celebrate Christ conquering death through the resurrection.
It is this optimistic phenomenon that we should embrace.
Water is also an element of the holy spirit, since Christians believe in holy baptism and the sprinkling of water or full submergence for sins to be “washed away”.
I believe that Day Zero can and must be defeated with the proviso that we are unified in our efforts to save water.
To further galvanise our unity, an interdenominational prayer service was held at the Athlone Mosque.
This epitomised the power of prayer and unity in our diversity. Every drop of water counts, and therefore I implore all to adhere to water-saving measures.
Regardless of race, creed or colour, the water crisis is a great opportunity to pull together and liberate us out of the dark quagmire we are currently immersed in.
