Glen CC could upset Goodwood’s title hopes
THE inter- club Flag bowls competition resumes today with round five and sees a number of teams in the mix for Premier League honours.
Defending champions Durbanville received a hiding at Western Province Cricket Club last time out, netting a paltry four points from a possible 15.
They surrendered their unbeaten run as well as top spot on the 10-team table.
Goodwood ( 36 ½ points) are once again at the summit, while fellow minnows Oakdale (36) have moved up to second, with Durbanville dropping to third (34) ahead of former champions Glen Country Club (33½).
WPCC (31), who now have a 50 percent win record, complete the top five.
Down south, Stellenbosch vd Stel (18), who have only managed a solitary win from four starts, are in last place and eight and a half points adrift of nearest rivals Somerset West (26½).
Edgemead (27) are in the danger zone as well, with only one positive result recorded.
WPCC’s second 11- point haul to go with two heavy defeats by 10½ margins, puts them in contention for a shot at the sought-after silverware.
They play at home for a second week running hosting Somerset West, a rival that stunned overrated Edgemead on home turf.
The out-of-towners may just offer up some cheek in that their hosts have battled with consistency judged by what they’ve dished up so far.
WPCC did receive a roast- ing from Edgemead in the second round as well as one from Constantia.
But, after seeing off the champions in no uncertain terms, maybe the better things are just around the corner.
Skips Daniel Loubser, Les Ryan and Neil Stofberg will be chasing five-point hauls, but 10 overall wouldn’t be sniffed at either.
“We never underestimate the opposition, nor do we give up,” said Loubser.
“The 12-strong side were spurred on by your media report last weekend that had us set to be walloped by Durbanville, so they used that as motivation and cashed in with a great performance.
“Somerset West come to us off a big win, so deserve the utmost of respect.
“Ryan and Stofberg will be out to show up the provincial selectors after being axed from teams recently announced. Both have every right to feel aggrieved,” said Loubser.
“The selectors have a lot to answer for.
“Les and Neil deserve better than what they got.”
Will Goodwood be at the summit at the end of the day? I doubt it.
Fast- improving Glen CC await them and should deliver a knockout blow.
Durbanville should get back to winning ways at home to in-and-out league newcomers Pinelands, who have lost two on the bounce, while Edgemead should prove too strong for Stel vd Stel.
Giant-killers Oakdale will be chasing a fourth win but have it all to do away to Constantia.
