The Taming of the Shrew. Tara Notcutt is directing an all-female cast at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, until March 3. At 8.15pm Monday to Saturdays; 7.45pm for performances designated for schools. The lead roles are played by Alicia McCormick and Daneel van der Walt. In Whorefish Bloomers: The Waitresses’ Lament. Kei-Ella Loewe’s adaptation of the 1980s feminist cabaret by Sue Pam-Grant and Sheena Stannard is back at Alexander Upstairs until February 24, at 9pm. Loewe also directs. The performers are Donna Cormack-Thomson and JamieLee Money who take on the roles of waitresses. Loewe, the daughter of Stannard, and cast, adapted the text to a contemporary Cape Town context taking the mickey out of their own situation as privileged, white, heterosexual women in South Africa, and the oppression they often face at the hands, and under the gaze, of men. It was nominated for Best Production and Best Creative (Directing) Awards at the Cape Town Fringe and back after a sold-out run in Johannesburg. The Inconvenience of Wings. After its stunning international success and a season at Theatre on the Bay, Lara Foot’s award-winning play is back at the Baxter in the Golden Arrow Studio Theatre – until March 3, at 7.30pm. The three-hander stars Andrew Buckland, Jennifer Steyn and Mncedisi Shabangu. It grapples with mental health issues, friendship, dysfunction and addiction. Tickets are R160 – R180.
