Kung Fu fighters

- Tyler Roodt

TEN-year-old Saifullah Chafeker, who was born without a left hand, will be competing in an international Kung Fu championship in Hong Kong this month.

Saifullah, from Goodwood, will join 17 other youngsters on the trip.

They are counting down to compete at the annual Hong Kong International Kung Fu Championships in two weeks’ time.

Mitchells Plain-based Kung Fu teacher, Muhammad Junaid Chafeker, will be leading the team. He is an accomplished disciple of Kung Fu, with several championships and gold medals under his belt.

In 2016, Chafeker competed in the annual Legends of Kung Fu Championships in the US and won four gold medals. He began teaching Kung Fu to youngsters shortly thereafter.

Despite Saifullah’s challenges he is determined to do his best.

“I’m very nervous about going to Hong Kong. Although I was born without a left hand, learning Kung Fu has helped me believe I don’t have a disability,” he said.

Yaghya Whatney, 17, from Paarl said: “I’m excited about going to Hong Kong. Since I began Kung Fu training, it has added colour to my life.”

Sinawo Yola, 15, from Khayelitsha said: “Kung Fu training has been tough, and something new for me. I can’t wait to compete against other athletes from different countries.”

“I’m excited and nervous, as this will be an international experience for them. I expect to take them on the full Kung Fu cultural experience in terms of Chinese culture,” Chafeker said.

The fighters will leave on March 13. However, they are still raising money for three other team members.

They will be holding two fundraising events; in the Wynberg High School Hall at 9.30am today and a dinner at Barron’s Estate in Ottery at 7pm on Saturday, March 9.

Tickets for both events can be bought by calling MJ Li Management on 081 711 1211 or 082 454 3027.
