Don’t blame all whites
MEMBERS of the white community (myself included) frequently respond to the threat of expropriation without compensation by pointing out that this measure is likely to scare off foreign investment, which in a nutshell is what happened in Zimbabwe.
However, there is another aspect that begs our attention: that the argument in favour of expropriation without compensation is built on the repugnant and easily refuted argument that all whites are “collectively responsible” for the actions of some whites. Failure to interrogate the morality of holding all whites responsible for the actions of some whites will continue to derail our economy at regular intervals, thanks to opportunistic politicians who seek power at all costs.
This is a debate that our nascent democracy – our fledgling nation – simply has to have.
