Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)
Family fun and extreme sports at Funderland
FUNDERLAND at GrandWest will feature extreme sports such as MX, BMX and skateboarding, drone racing and go-karting for tweens and teens.
Heidi Croxford, spokesperson for Funderland, believes that “while many of our sporting activities are tween and teen-focused, we encourage full family participation at Funderland.
“We truly believe in the power of ‘families who play together, stay together’ and have thus ensured that there are loads of opportunities for moms and dads to play with their kids too.”
Youngsters will learn all about the value of teamwork, with an opportunity to shine in a non-competitive environment while practising a range of drills and skills across a variety of sport disciplines on the multi-sports court, sponsored by Funderland’s partnership with Adidas and their Football4All programme.
Football4All is a national grass-roots soccer programme, providing primary school children with expert coaching by former international players.
The programme’s focus is on encouraging an active social time through fair play and friendship.
The soccer-focused zone, managed by the great George Dearnaley, former Bafana Bafana player, now a coach and Soccer Biz whizz, will see some of the most famous former Bafana Bafana players offering coaching.
Sharing their tips and tricks at the Cape Town event, expect soccer shooting competitions, juggling (with no hands!) and dribbling expertise from former players including David Kannemeyer (former Bafana Bafana, Kaizer Chiefs, Sundowns and Ajax player), Thando Mngomeni (former Bafana Bafana, Wits and SuperSport player) and Brent Carelse (former Bafana Bafana, Ajax, Sundowns and SuperSport player).
There will also be a special guest appearance by Banyana Banyana head coach, Desiree Ellis.
The soccer zone will also include a unique Adidas soccer cage, and coaches will be ready to teach all moms and dads some serious skills to show off to their kids.
“Helping children find fun through sport is a great passion of mine,” said George Dearnaley.
“From tweens and teens to adults, we use sport to promote healthy activity and that’s exactly what the thinking behind Funderland’s soccer zone is founded on.”
In addition to the outdoor soccer zone, there will be a mini-sports Funtainment zone with table tennis, fuzzball, air hockey, basketball and netball hoops.
The extreme sports zone will be run by Old School Productions who are renowned for their action and alternative and fun sport and lifestyle events.
Featuring MX, BMX and skateboarding, and with a skate park, half-pipe and trick biking, there will be loads of applause for the display of skills.
Funderland takes place from March 28 to April 7.
