Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival to help rebuild Knysna

- KARISHMA DIPA

AS THE Pink Loerie Mardi Gras and Arts Festival turns 18, its organisers have decided that proceeds from this year’s event will go towards rebuilding Knysna, which was ravaged by fires last year.

About 1 000 homes in Knysna and its surrounds were destroyed in June last year, and the fires claimed seven lives. Scores of people were left destitute, and residents are working hard to rebuild the town.

“Knysna has for the past 18 years been the festival’s home, and it’s only natural to show your love and support to those that have supported you openly, and in some cases, silently,” said festival organiser John O’Neil.

Thousands of people are expected to visit the festival, which runs from May 24 to 27. It is acclaimed for its celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex communities.

Money will be collected through ticket sales and the annual VIP dinner and fundraising auction. Some items for auction are expected to be donated by delegates to the Mr Gay World 2018 Knysna South Africa, to be held in Knysna from May 21 to 27.

O’Neil said organisers of the Mardi Gras hoped to raise about R300 000, which would go towards rebuilding Knysna’s infrastructure. “We will sit with all the key roleplayers and identify the areas of need and assist there. Being the only openly LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/ ques- tioning, and others) festival in South Africa, we are inclusive of all cultures.

“The Pink Loerie Mardi Gras is also an event that incorporates the region’s LGBTQ+ identity, but also celebrates the cultural contribution the LGBTQ+ community makes to the region to overcome a history of suppression. Turning 18, it was time to grow up a little, and what can be more fun than some feathers, leather, sequins and mascara.”

The four-day festival will feature a performance by international singing sensation and winner of the Voice Israel, Lina, as well as oyster-tasting and the annual street parade, which paints the streets of Knysna with cheer, glitter, colour and charm. For more info, visit www.webtickets.co.za
