Kids’ licence to have fun

MEET the FunderBudd­ies at the 11-day non-stop fun family festival and kids expo, Funderland.

The event is on at GrandWest until next Saturday.

There are fantasy zones, live acts, e-sports and virtual reality gaming.

Funderland’s mascots and heroes, the FunderBudd­ies, include Simunye, Glee, Sudan, Owlbird Einstein,

Amanzi, Koti Koti, Harry the Heart and Umkhuseli.

Here is some more informatio­n about the mascots:

• The water warrior and Day Zero hero, Amanzi, will share water saving tips. “Amanzi” is the Zulu word for water.

• Koti Koti is Zulu slang for “tin can” and he encourages everyone to recycle.

• Harry The Heart encourages children to play sports. He is an active guy. He will focus on this year’s Soccer World Cup in Russia and the Rugby World Cup next year in Japan.

• Owlbird Einstein encourages a strong message of “readers are leaders”. He believes our reading can change lives. Focusing on the youngsters attending Funderland, Owlbird Einstein, inspired by the genius of Albert Einstein, will share fun and playful learning opportunit­ies.

• Sudan, named after the last white rhino that died recently, focuses on teaching children about wildlife conservati­on. He encourages children to fight for the rights of animals by “speaking for those without a voice”.

• Joy and happiness define Glee, the friendship FunderBudd­y. Ready to share a hug, Glee will share the importance of friendship to human happiness and that meaningful relationsh­ips take hard work.

• Simunye, meaning “we are one” in Zulu, will promote unity among all youngsters who are part of the rainbow nation.

• Umkhuseli, the protector, encourages everyone to be a buddy, not a bully.
