Christel House shows pride
CHARITY organisation Christel House South Africa hosted a special assembly last week in honour of its achievements of last year.
Christel House is an educationbased charity organisation that helps Cape Town’s most impoverished pupils. The assembly, themed “Going For Gold”, was held to commemorate the school’s achievements of the past year, including its 98% matric pass rate,
65% of which were Bachelor’s passes, and
32 total distinctions.
More than
120 people were treated to a show by the school’s musical programme, consisting of more than 300 pupils, which included the brass band, the school choir, drum majorettes and dance groups.
The event was also held to welcome Christel House SA’s new chief executive Adri Marais, who said: “In a world where the schools in the communities we serve have a lower than 5% pass rate in mathematics, our support system allows for a spectacular 88% pass rate.
“This shows that South Africa has amazing talent among its youth, but it does need the opportunity to excel, and the Christel House model shows that it can be done.”
The school’s new Robotic Systems programme earned it even more acclaim when two Grade 10 pupils, known as the Robo Knights, won a gold medal in the junior category of the World Robot Olympiad last year.
“It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase to our friends the work we do, but equally, it was a privilege to be able to be a member of the audience and to experience the power of our collective efforts in not just improving the opportunities in poor communities, but to sustainably work towards breaking the cycle of poverty,” said Marais.
Members of Christel House
SA, pupils and otherwise, are extremely proud of all that their school has accomplished last year, and hope to build on the achievements this year.
