Harris releases first children’s book

- Tyler Roodt

AWARD-WINNING actor Neil Patrick Harris, best known for his role as Barney Stinson in the TV series How I Met Your Mother, has released his first book for children.

The Magic Misfits is the first in a new series of novels by Harris, who beautifully tells the life story of a young boy named Carter Locke whose parents pass away, resulting in him being sent to live with his estranged uncle.

Carter’s uncle is not the nicest of guardians, he’s a con artist who draws in bystanders with magic tricks and then robs them of their valuables.

Carter learns magic tricks from his uncle and helps him on his jobs, until one day he decides he’s had enough of stealing and runs away.

On his journey, Carter meets a sinister carnival ringleader, a mysterious magician, and a band of kids who practice magic, just like him.

Carter develops a kinship with them and together they form the story’s namesake: the Magic Misfits.

However, this book has more inside than just a gripping story, there are multiple hidden secrets to uncover, codes to crack and even detailed instructions on a few magic tricks you can try yourself at home.

The book has been showered with praise by other well-known writers, including David Walliams, author of Gangsta Granny and The World’s Worst Children, and Lemony Snicket, who wrote A Series of Unfortunate Events.

While Harris has written several other books before, this is his first try at writing a children’s book and it does not disappoint.

The Magic Misfits is for children aged

6-9 and will be available in most good bookstores for R215.
