DJ on track to ensure his dream comes true

- ASANDA SOKANYILE

DRUGS and gangsterism were no match for his passion and love for music and entertainment.

Sive Ngadlela, 22, a local DJ, was raised by his grandmother in one of Khayelitsha’s most notorious areas and he wanted nothing more than to make her proud.

Ngadlela is the first of three children, and although he was not raised by his parents, they had always had a close relationship. “I lived with my granny and uncles because I attended a school closer to her. We have a very close relationship and she has always encouraged me to do and be the best I can be. I know she is proud of me,” he said.

The DJ fell head-over-heels into house music in 2009 and has never looked back. “I grew up in a home where just about everyone was into music, there were different musical influences as everybody had their preference, but to me they all sounded amazing,” he said.

In December of that year, Ngadlela asked his mother to buy him a laptop instead of new clothes for the festive season. “After I got my computer I did some research and among other things enrolled at the Soul Candi Institute of Music. While at the school I hustled a little and learnt as much as I could about the industry. Then I graduated in 2013,” he said.

Last year, Ngadlela entered the Makoya Mix, a DJ competition that has been running since 2012, which he won. “Now I am the resident DJ at Cape Town’s largest and hottest entertainment spot, Rands,” he said.

Ngadlela told Weekend Argus he is able to “mix songs that people would not have thought

could be mixed. I am a versatile DJ, I look up to DJ Kent because I always wondered how he does it”.

“Now, I am getting there but as a DJ you can never be comfortable and relax in your craft. There is always something new but I can say with confidence, I am the best in Cape Town.”

He has shared the stage with the likes of DJ Tira, international DJ Rocco, DJ Spectacula and many more. The budding DJ has plans for his own studio to put his audio engineering knowledge to good use.
