Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)
ON THE BOARDS
Contagious Theatre. James Cairns is performing in two productions at the
Kalk Bay Theatre: “James Cairns: against humanity” – an improv piece (tomorrow until July 18) and “The Devil and Billy Markham” (on until July 21).
Cairns is a member of the Joburg theatre company, Contagious Theatre, which took five shows to the recent National Arts Festival in Makhanda (formerly Grahamstown). The company’s “Silkworm” won a Standard Bank Ovation Award. “The Devil and Billy Markham” won Cairns an Ovation award at the
NAF last year. Tickets are R150. Book at www.kalkbaytheatre.co.za or call 0217887257.
The Incident. Here is another play staged at the National Arts Festival.
The festival’s shows seem to be rolling into Cape Town. In “The Incident”, Swedish playwright Joakim Daun “tackles belonging, migration, racism and power through an intimate love story spanning Sweden and Zimbabwe”.
The play premiered at the Harare International Festival of the Arts last year. It received critical acclaim form the audience and was awarded Outstanding Zimbabwean Theatrical Production this year. Elizabeth Zaza Muchemwa (from Zimbabwe) directs award-winning British actress Mimi Ndiweni and Swedish actor Nikola Ruzicic. The play was staged at the NAF this year. See it today at 3pm.
Tickets are R110 if bought online: shows.alexanderbar.co.za and R120 at the door. For more information call 021 300 1088.
The Producers. The Constantiaberg Theatre Players is presenting the hit musical at The Masque, until July 21.
This is a non-professional theatre group and they have staged the musical with aplomb – with all the bells and whistles that one would expect from a commercial production. The company has produced a show of excellence – stunning performances, set and costumes. The show won 12 Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards – yes, that’s how good it is.
Tickets are R120. Book at
Computicket or the Masque on
021 788 6999/ 021 788 1898 or at bookings@masquetheatre.co.za.
