Game drives

My partner and I unknowingly chose the front seat, which turned out to be the best option – we got the most spectacular views.

Once our guide found the perfect position and turned off the ignition, we all sat in silence and watched as the elephants grazed peacefully. It was something truly spectacular. As the elephants slowly wandered off into the bush, that was our cue to continue with our drive.

During the colder months, the animals are harder to spot because they don’t wander as much, especially late in the day.

It’s recommended that guests do a minimum of two drives (morning and afternoon), for a better chance of seeing more wildlife.

Other sightings on the drive included springboks, wildebeest and a herd of temperamental rhinos who put on quite a show once they had an audience.

Unfortunately, we didn’t see any lions, but I was fine with that.

The two-and-a-half-hour game drive includes a picnic, where we watched the sunset surrounded by nothing but trees and beautiful mountains.

This is the only time guests are allowed to get off the truck. We were all very nervous but the wine and light snacks soon helped ease the nerves.

It was dark by the time we headed back to our accommodation with nothing but the stars shining brightly overhead. We spent the night at Kwena Lodge. This modern twist on the traditional Khoisan hut, is nestled among the trees and boasts uninterrupted views of the Langeberg and Outeniqua Mountains.

At night, you can watch the stars through the skylight directly above the comfortable double bed, which is exactly what I did.

It gives that feeling of sleeping under the stars in the warmth and comfort of your bed.

The spacious room is fitted with a fireplace, perfect for those chilly nights, a deep bath and an openplan shower.

After supper, guests can enjoy some downtime around the bonfire outside the restaurant.

I found myself leaning back in my chair and staring at the stars while listening to the sound of firewood cracking.

The following morning, I woke up well rested but sad that I had to leave this tranquil paradise so soon.

As we were preparing to leave, I saw a tower of giraffes standing tall above the leafy trees, leisurely grazing in between short runs.

I truly believe this spectacular sighting was nature’s goodbye to us as we took the four-hour drive back home.
