‘Gimme’ more of Hanna’s rap

- Tyler Roodt

HANNA, 19, is an average CampusKey student at the University of Cape Town, or she would be, were it not for the fact she is also quite a successful rapper.

Born in Zimbabwe, she is a second- year electrical and computer engineering student.

Hanna discovered her passion for rapping at a young age and has been composing music over the past year.

“I grew up with a bit of a talent and obsession over memorising and reciting complex lyrics. Whether I’m playing it or listening to it, rap has always made sense as it’s where writing and music meet.

“I’d been producing for almost a year and writing for much longer, so music has always been there. Then I posted a video of me reciting one of my favourite verses that I wrote on Instagram and Twitter, and it went viral. That’s when I knew I was on to something,” she said.

After finding success on social media with multiple videos, Hanna has now released her first single, Gimme, which she noted was a bit different from the videos she had posted.

“I feel so good about it! A lot of my rapping videos on social media up and hopes this new content will be as well received as her previous works.

“I’ve been working on a good number of singles to be released throughout the rest of the year, as well as with many other talented UCT artists on collaborations.

“I do feel pressured to make a certain style of music particularly because I’ve been labelled as a rapper.

“However, I’d love to be in a place where my content is received independent of the expectations I currently feel.”
