Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)
Art with heart
BUDDING young artists from Khayelitsha and Wolwerivier are creating artworks from rubbish like plastic bags and egg boxes.
These children are learning how recycling – finding a new use for rubbish – can be fun.
Recycling also helps save the environment and planet Earth.
Their artworks will be celebrated at an exhibition in March and auctioned to raise money for the Giving Is Living charity.
The charity was set up in 2015 to help animal welfare organisations across the country. Since then it has received donations from more than 60 professional local artists.
The auction will be held in support of Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha, Wolwerivier Outreach Work and the SA Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB).
Sioni Puri, founder of Giving Is Living, said: “We got children from Khayelitsha and Wolwerivier to make art out of trash with the help of some of the local artists. This art would then be auctioned and the children would receive prizes for their participation.”
The charity recently hosted its first workshop with the children. Puri said: “It was a huge success; we had over 50 children of all ages participate.”
Lisa Makhapela, 13, said: “It was a really wonderful experience making this art.”
Iminathi Ndabeni, 8, said: “I love art. Art helps me to focus and it keeps me calm.”
They all had fun and their efforts will be rewarded with a boat ride to Seal Island.
“The theme of the workshop was creating art from the trash collected in the area. The goal was not only to inspire the children in an artistic sense, but also to raise awareness of the importance of keeping their community clean and to show them that something beautiful can be created from rubbish.”
The Giving Is Living charity art auction will take place on March 16 at the Atlantic Beach Country Club. Tickets will be available on Quicket. For more information see www. givingisliving.co.za.
