WHILE the Proteas were busy beating Pakistan in a cricket Test series, big hits and tumbling wickets were the order of the day at the SuperStrikers Challenge in Wynberg last weekend.

More than 250 juniors, ranging from under-11 to under-14, representing clubs across the city – including hosts Blue Bells, JP21 Project, Ottery-based All Rounder Academy, St Augustine, Somerset West, Hanover Park, Ottoman, Khayelitsha Hub, Solomon Mokhasana from Khayelitsha and Durbanville, took part in the fifth edition of the six-a-side competition.

The winners on the day were Durbanville (U11) , Somerset West (U12), All Rounder Academy (U13) and St Augustine CC who beat Primrose Hub by two wickets to lift the U14 title.

St Augustine coach/manager Salvador Nel said the competition was pleasing and challenging at the same time.

“Competing in a one-day tournament comes with its own pressures. Our day started early and Saints ended up winning all five their group games. It was a gripping final played between two quality teams. The Primrose Hub team put us under great pressure but we held our nerve,” he said

Blue Bells chairman Irafaan Sambo said the aim of tournament was to keep children healthy and active and foster a love for the game.

“At the same time to improve the virtually of non-existent facilities at the club. The goal is to erect the clubhouse from funds raised,” he said.
