Top junior sprinters from the Puma School of Speed compete at Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch. Last weekend’s event was the first of five that would be held in various locations across the country. PICTURE: MARK SAMPSON THE best athletes from all over the province gathered at Coetzenburg Stadium in Stellenbosch recently for the Under-14 to U19 Puma School of Speed 2019.

The School of Speed was founded by

Puma in partnership with Stillwater Sports in order to unearth the best young athletes in South Africa, and is headed by the world’s fastest man, eight-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt.

The event is held in five locations across the country and sees athletes compete in long and high jump, various sprinting events, hurdles and relays. It also counts as an official qualifying event for provincial and national championships.

The athletes and their audience were also treated to a musical show by local artists including “Idols SA” winner Paxton Fielies last weekend.

One of the stars on the track for the day was 18-year-old Mukendi Makolo from Plumstead, who took the victory in the U19 boys 100m with a time of 11 seconds.

“I started running in primary school, I’ve always loved running. It’s been a passion of mine,” he said.

Makolo is a self-trained sprinter and he spends his free time watching YouTube training videos to improve his technique.

Despite all the challenges and limitations he faces, Makolo was determined to do his best and have a good time, and his training has clearly paid off.

“I love the vibe and I get a chance to meet new people and I also get to see other athletes on the rise and who to look out for because I like a good challenge,” said Makolo.

Last Saturday’s meet in Cape Town was the first of the five events this year, and the School of Speed will visit Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, and Potchefstroom between February and March.

Stillwater Sports managing director,

Michael Meyer said: “We witnessed tremendous performances at Coetzenburg, and look forward to future PUMA School of Speed meets.”
