savouring sunday lunches

-

As our palates have become more refined over time, our options have expanded too, writes

THE Sunday lunch tradition is not going away anytime soon, although it has changed a bit over the years.

As the food we enjoy has changed, so has some aspects of the Sunday get-togethers.

It’s arguable that South Africans have become less indulgent when it comes to the Sunday spread – the food has been paired down, menus cut and it’s more about quality, not quantity.

The food is not as rich but the flavours and colours are still there and of course, the main tenet of getting together with loved ones.

There is another aspect that we sometimes overlook – Sundays present the perfect opportunity to get out of the house and lunch in a different setting.

You save on the time spent in the kitchen and, because you’re in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, it’s also a chance to have lunch with a view.

From coast to coast, there are some great lunch menus out there – summer is the time to explore.

Cape Town is also known for having some of the best restaurants in the world, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Tokyo, Sydney and London.

We certainly are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining in the Mother City – from tried-and-tested favourites to lesser-known gems, with stunning viewpoints.

Briony Brookes, the communications and public relations manager of Cape Town Tourism, describes some of the restaurants which truly stand out for their Sunday smorgasbords and wonderful views in Cape Town:

TWO OCEANS RESTAURANT (CAPE POINT)

If it’s a panoramic vista you’re after, the Two Oceans Restaurant at Cape Point is the place for you.

From its long balcony area, diners can feast on some of the best ocean views overlooking False Bay, while enjoying a menu featuring everything a seafood lover could possibly desire.

The restaurant serves lunch from 12pm up until 4.30pm, so be sure to arrive nice and early to secure the best seats.

TOBAGO’S (RADISSON BLU HOTEL)

Tobago’s, at Radisson Blu Hotel Waterfront, offers a phenomenal Sunday lunch buffet experience.

The buffet offering is bursting at the seams with carvery meats, Yorkshire puddings, a variety of hot dishes, a salad bar, a section heaving with desserts and a local cheese selection served with port and sherry.

The buffet is available every Sunday from 12.30pm to 3.30pm and includes a glass of bubbly.

AZURE RESTAURANT (TWELVE APOSTLES HOTEL)

Well-known in Cape Town as a fine dining experience, the Azure Restaurant at the Twelve Apostles Hotel, has claimed many awards for its setting, food and service.

The menu also boasts a number of signature dishes, which include the exquisite roast duck and the peppadew tart – served with cucumber ribbon salad.

There is an outdoor terrace, which is perfect for those who enjoy their food with spectacular views of the ocean in the background. Lunch at the restaurant is served between 12.30pm and 3.30pm.

HARBOUR HOUSE (KALK BAY)

If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, head out to Kalk Bay and have a scrumptious meal at the Harbour House Restaurant, which is perched on the rocks of the harbour at Kalk Bay.

Here you’ll be able to enjoy some mouth-watering seafood, while overlooking the panoramic views of Kalk Bay.

Lunch starts at 12pm, so gather your family and friends and enjoy one of Cape Town’s top restaurants.

THE GRAND CAFE (V&A WATERFRONT)

If you’re in the mood for some festive vibes, head over to the Grand Cafe, at the V&A Waterfront.

Here you’ll be able to enjoy a fully loaded scrumptious meal, while traling your toes in the sparkling white beach sand at the restaurant.

This restaurant is also known for its cocktails, making it a great spot for you to enjoy some lunch and have a sip on some drinks with your friends – just make sure you have a designated driver.
