Weekend Argus (Saturday Edition)

Fisher sticks to the same old race theme

- GRANT MOMPLÉ | Paarl

EVERY week Weekend Argus readers are presented with another “Thinking Allowed” column penned by Ryland Fisher.

Just about every week he gets stuck on his same old theme of racebaiting and stirring the racial pot, relishing in the “vitriolic attacks” that he generates from some of the “privileged” Argus readers.

Like Ryland, I am also a man of mixed heritage, but unlike Ryland, I have embraced mine and moved on.

What purpose it serves to continually stir the old colonial, apartheid, privilege, inequality pot week after week I am not sure, only he will be able to answer that.

To resort to the old socialist “take from those who have to give to those who don’t” rhetoric has proven over and over again to result in absolute chaos, destroying economies, infrastructure and lives. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

I sometimes wonder if Ryland acknowledges that he falls into the “haves sector” of society.

State capture has cost our country R1.5 trillion and herein lies a very good starting point to begin to address inequality. Imagine what we could have done to improve the lives of so many South Africans by upgrading educational facilities, service delivery, health care etc.

Most of my family now reside in New Zealand and Australia (along with many thousands more), taking with them all of their tertiary qualifications (heavily subsidised by the South African taxpayer), and more importantly, the future tax revenue that they could have contributed to our country.

So Ryland, please try and use your journalistic talents to work on a more positive narrative on how to take our country forward instead of harping on about all the negative aspects.
