These compressed blocks of coal dust and other fuels are a good choice if you need hot coals fast. Many people prefer them because they cut down the preparation time. Be careful with briquettes that have been presoaked in fire-lighting fluid – they can leave food with a chemical taste if you don’t allow the fluid to burn off before cooking. Briquettes are often cheaper than good braai wood and more readily available. They’re also the ideal choice when cooking in a kettle braai.
