Mealies in ba­con

4 fresh mealies with leaves 45 ml (3 T) fresh herbs, chopped salt and freshly ground pep­per 30 ml (2 T) olive oil 250 g streaky ba­con

1 Clean the mealies of all hair but keep the leaves at­tached.

2 Mix to­gether the herbs, salt, pep­per and oil and pour over the mealies.

3 Wrap strips of ba­con around the mealies, se­cur­ing the strips with tooth­picks that have been soaked in wa­ter be­fore us­ing

(to pre­vent catch­ing alight on the fire).

4 Braai the mealies in a fold­ing grid (spe­cially de­signed for vegetables) over mod­er­ate coals for 15-20 min­utes un­til cooked and the ba­con is crispy.
