Clinton vs Trump: the race is on

- Compiled by JANE VORSTER

WHO would ever have predicted it: a brash, billionaire reality TV star versus an ambitious, tough-as-nails former First Lady? Unless something drastically unexpected happens come November, one of them will be the next US president.

If it’s Donald Trump (70) he’d be the oldest person yet to take office. He’d also be one of the least experienced presidents – as a real estate, hotel and casino tycoon, he has no political track record.

And if it’s Hillary Clinton (68), she’d be the country’s first woman president. She’d also be the first former First Lady to become the nation’s commander-in-chief – her husband, Bill Clinton, was the 42nd president of the US and she’s on track to become its 45th.

At the time of going to print Bernie Sanders, Hillary’s main opponent in the Democratic primaries, was vowing to fight on – but with President Barack Obama already having congratulated her for winning the primary race, her nomination seems pretty much a done deal.

As she and Trump prepare to face off, it looks like it’s going to be one of the ugliest, most unpleasant American presidential elections in history.

Meanwhile – as new stats show that 37 percent of the country “strongly” dislikes Hillary while for Trump it’s a mindboggling 53 percent – experts are warning that rather than voting for who they like, voters will have to choose who they dislike the least.

“What difference does it make?” asks commentator John Kass of the Chicago Tribune newspaper. “One of the two will be president. Perhaps we deserve them.”

As the US presidential race hots up we look at the candidates’ policies and prospects, and find out what they think of each other!

‘Trump is not someone who should ever have the nuclear codes’ – HILLARY CLINTON ‘Hillary is desperate, she is sad, and she is obviously very nervous’ – DONALD TRUMP
