LOYISO BALA AND DAUGHTER KENZIE

-

This is one smitten dad – and when you lay eyes on little Kenzie it’s easy to see why. The adorable three-year-old wriggling in the arms of her musician father knows just how to work the camera. “When I just look at her – those are the best moments for me,” Loyiso (36) says proudly. “Life stands still and I admire her beauty.

“She’s at that age where she’ll say, ‘Daddy, what are you looking at?’ and I won’t even be aware I’ve been staring,” he adds, laughing.

Loyiso cherishes every second he spends with Kenzie because his work often keeps him on the road. But there’s another, more poignant reason time with Kenzie is so precious. Loyiso was just seven when he lost his father, Arthur, to illness. “My dad and I were close. When he died I had to come to terms with the fact I’d grow up without a father.”

Whenever he feels guilty about having to spend so much time away from his wife, Jennifer (38), and Kenzie he recalls his past. “I remind myself I grew up under worse circumstances so Kenzie will be fine.”

When it comes to instilling life lessons in his daughter, Loyiso believes in three building blocks: “Teach your children to say sorry, please and thank you.”

He also wants her to grow up knowing she doesn’t have to try too hard to make him proud. “Just before Kenzie was born I wrote her a letter to read when she’s older. The theme of it is that the day she was born was the day she made me proud.”

So what’s going to make this Father’s Day special for him? He grins. “I’ve spent three years watching kiddies’ programmes. It would be so great if I could get just a gap to watch a movie aimed at adults!”
