SUMMER is on the way and soon it will be time to slip into swimsuits, T-shirts and shorts. There’s no doubt about it – the pressure will be on to shed the extra padding that crept up on you during the colder months.

If the thought of getting into shape makes you groan because you think it means stretching not only your body but your budget to pay for gym membership, think again.

There’s no need to fork out a cent to get fit. Yes, there’s an app for that. And a few YouTube channels and a free group run too.

Here’s a selection so you can pick something that suits you and helps you to find your get-up-and-go. These are five of the best-rated and most popular fitness apps – and they’re all free in the Android and Apple App stores.

Nike Training Club

What it offers: More than 100 instructor-narrated fitness routines categorised according to your goal – whether it’s to be strong, lean or toned, for example.

To start off you choose an intensity level (beginner, intermediate or advanced), then pick a workout (such as the 15-minute explosive power) and the app tells you what equipment you need for the routine. Many workouts need no equipment but some require you to invest in dumbbells, an exercise ball, a medicine ball or a yoga mat, for example.

You can create playlists for your workouts and if you don’t understand what the instructor is talking about you can watch a video demonstration of each move. What’s great about it: You can have Serena Williams talk you through your workout – it’s like having the tennis champ as your personal trainer! Other celebs featured include actor Kevin Hart and singer Ellie Goulding, who talk you through routines that have worked for them. Best for: Beginners, who’ll find workouts to kick off a fitness routine, but it’s great for seasoned exercisers too.
