The kakapo is indigenous to New Zealand but extinct on the two main islands ‒ North and South. The surviving birds are kept on four small predator-free islands ‒ Anchor, Codfish, Maud and Little Barrier. As of November 2016 the total population was 154. Distributi­on on main islands around 1840 before going extinct Anchor Island
