BEHAVIOUR

-

Unlike other parrots, the kakapo is solitary (except in the breeding season). The bird spends the day resting under shrubs, in burrows under tree roots or in rock crevices, then comes out to feed at dusk.

The kakapo may not be able to fly but it has strong legs with which it can “jog” for about 5 km. It’s also an excellent climber and can reach the tops of tall trees. Its wings help it to balance when climbing and to glide down from a height.
