“As a public service broadcaster we have a mandate to educate the citizens and we therefore have taken this bold decision to show that violent protests aren’t necessary.” – May 2016. Eight SABC journalists were fired for criticising this decision and the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa ordered the SABC to withdraw the decision but Motsoeneng was having none of it. Seven of the SABC Eight were reinstated and the broadcaster rescinded its decision on protests.
