We all oohed and aahed at pictures of PRINCE GEORGE (4) on his first day at school. How cute he looked in his smart little uniform holding the hand of his proud dad, PRINCE WILLIAM (35). His new school, Thomas’ Battersea, in southwest London, is not your average school . . . Every day starts with a handshake The schoolday begins and ends with a firm handshake, plus good eye contact with the teacher. Pupils are also expected to be unfailingly courteous and polite, according to the school’s website. It’s not cheap Fees start at £5 868 (R99 756) a term when the kids are four years old, climbing to £6 628 (R112 676) from age seven. Homework is optional Despite its strong emphasis on academic success, unlike other schools – both private and government – homework remains optional until year four (ages 8-9). Only bright sparks need apply Applicants are put through an entrance exam at the tender age of two or three. Pupils eat like (healthy) kings Healthy food is paramount and meals contain no additives or hydrogenated fats. Salt and sugar are limited. Kindness is a school rule The most important school rule is “be kind” and the highlight of each term is the school’s Be Extra Kind Day when all pupils learn about human rights and those less well-off in the world. Sport is competitive The school puts a strong emphasis on physical activity – no doubt one of the selling points to sporty Kate and Wills. Lots of extramurals There are 24 after-school clubs – even a debating club for five-year-olds as well as philosophy, Italian, fencing and golf. Ballet is compulsory George will have to get his plié on, as lessons are compulsory for girls and boys up to the age of seven. There’s a ski chalet The school owns Thomas’ Daheim, a ski chalet in the Austrian Alps where pupils are taken on trips in years five and six.
