JAKE AND SHAIK – THE BROMANCE THAT WENT BAD
1999 Shaik raises eyebrows by writing off more than R1 million that Jacob Zuma owed him. 2001 Shaik is arrested for the possession of secret documents. Investigators discover the corrupt dealings between him and Zuma (then chairperson of the ANC). 11 OCTOBER 2004 Shaik stands trial on fraud and corruption charges. He pleads not guilty, claiming his financial dealings with several high-profile government members had been legitimate. 4 MAY 2005 In his 165-page ruling Judge Hilary Squire finds Shaik guilty on two counts of corruption and one of fraud. The judge says the court found “overwhelming” evidence of a corrupt relationship between Shaik and Zuma. Both corruption charges relate to Zuma (RIGHT).
8 JUNE 2005 Shaik is sentenced to 15 years behind bars. He appeals to the supreme court of appeal but it fails on 6 November. 2 OCTOBER 2007 Two years later he takes another chance at appealing, this time to the Constitutional Court, but is rejected. 3 MARCH 2009 After two years and four months behind bars, Shaik is released on medical parole and sent to recuperate at his family home in Durban. MARCH 2011 Shaik is arrested at his home and taken to the Durban Westville Prison. The Sunday Times reports that an altercation with a man named Mohamed Ismail had led to Shaik’s arrest. He’s released after a few days. JUNE 2015 His “severe, uncontrollable hypertension” (the reason for his medical parole) seems to have subsided, as the former businessman is regularly spotted out and about. OCTOBER 2017 Shaik, serving the last two years of his 15-year sentence under medical parole, reveals he wouldn’t hesitate to testify against Jacob Zuma.
